Brodie Wild Workday

Texas ThistleThanks to everyone who came out to Brodie Wild on Sunday 2/19 and volunteered in spite of the foul weather!

Brodie Wild is a 4.5 acre savanna/native plant area in Austin, TX that NPSOT-Austin and NPAT partner on with the City of Austin Water Utility Wildlands Conservation Division.   Brodie Wild is on the southwest corner of Slaughter Lane and Brodie Lane.

We accomplished a lot during the workday.

  • Installed the 6 posts for the 2 signs and the kiosk (involved jackhammering all six holes and concrete)
  • Planted ~140 native plants: Liatris, Little Bluestem, Bushy Bluestem, Eastern Gamagrass
  • Planted 4 bags of native plant seed: Prairie Parsley, Liatris
  • Collected ~15 bags of trash plus some large items
  • Cut lots of ashe juniper

If you volunteered but your name is missing from the list below, please email me and let me know so I can add it.

Volunteers: Kirsti Harms, Rebecca S. Hill, Roger Myers, Leslie Bush, Yates Barreda, Melanie Palmer, George Murphy, Savannah Murphy, Scott Lenharth, Coby Dinges, Lisa Spangler, Jason Spangler

    Upcoming activities:

On April 15th at 10:00am – 11:30am, we will be having a field trip to Brodie Wild as part of Austin Nature Day activities.  This is just a field trip so you don’t have to worry about being put to work while you are there.  🙂  The native plants and native wildflowers should be blooming nicely around that time so we should have a nice hike.  See the Austin Nature Day entry for more information.

We’ll also be having another work day sometime in the next couple months, but we have not yet scheduled it.  We will send out announcements when we know more.

P.S.  If you want to read more about Brodie Wild, such as the plant species list and the site restoration plan, go to http://brodiewild.org/ .
